The place, in short

The west coast: wide dark-sand beaches, surf breaks, rice fields still squeezed between cafés, and Seminyak's restaurants a short drive south. It is young, lively and busy.

On the coastal plain, a few metres above the sea.

Who it suits

  • Surfers, and people learning
  • Couples after good food and a beach
  • Travellers who like their days to start late

Not for: Quiet or traditional village life. Expect traffic and building sites; peace is found further up the coast, or in the hills.

What to do

  1. Learn or ride at Batu Bolong

Long, mellow waves, with a popular break called Old Man's: the usual place to take a first lesson.

  2. Walk on to Echo Beach

About five minutes along the sand from Batu Bolong. The waves are fast and hollow, for intermediate and advanced surfers, and the sunset is the reason to come.

  3. Go on to Tanah Lot

The sea temple on its rock is about 25 minutes up the coast, and it is at its best late in the day.

  4. Eat in Seminyak

About 10 km south, roughly twenty minutes away, the island's densest run of restaurants. Book a table for the evening you arrive.

How long, and when

How long to stay: two or three nights

A beach stay of two or three nights between the hills and the Bukit works well; longer if you surf.

The best time of day: late afternoon

The coast is hot at midday. Surf is often best early; the beach clubs and the sunset belong to late afternoon.

In the year. The dry season, roughly April to October, brings steadier surf and clearer skies. The wet season is greener and showery, and the sea is rougher.
