The sea is a road
Four crossings from Bali lead somewhere that feels like another country. Choose one on the map to see how you get there, when it works and what can go wrong.

01 · The nearest crossing
Nusa Penida and Lembongan
A fast boat from Sanur puts you on Penida's cliffs and reefs the same morning. Lembongan and little Ceningan lie beside it, and the water between them is where the reef mantas feed.
How you cross
By sea: Sanur to Nusa Penida
30 to 45 minutes
Fast boats, many a day. As short as 25 minutes in calm water, and up to an hour when the strait is lively.
Best months: April to October
- January: Wet or rough
- February: Wet or rough
- March: Good
- April: Best

- June: Best
- July: Best
- August: Best
- September: Best
- October: Best
- November: Good
- December: Good
April to October is the calm, clear season. Mantas are seen all year, but never promised. In January and February the crossing is the first thing to go wrong.
How long to give it
Two nights lets you do the reef and the cliffs without racing. A single long day works if the mantas are all you want.
Worth knowing
- The crossing can be lively. Operators quote anything from 25 minutes to an hour, and boats are sometimes cancelled when the swell is up.
- The island's roads are steep and patchy, so we arrange a driver rather than a scooter.
- Boats also run from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan, the smaller island to the west.

02 · Across the Wallace Line
The Gilis and Lombok
The strait between Bali and Lombok is deep, and it matters: Alfred Russel Wallace noticed in the 1850s that the birds change across it. The three Gilis are small, sandy and have no motorised traffic. Lombok is larger and drier, with the volcano Rinjani rising behind it.
How you cross
By sea: Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan
1 h 30 to 2 h 15
Fast boats, about 48 sailings a week across nine operators. Most take about an hour and a half.
By sea: Padang Bai to Lembar, Lombok
4 to 5 hours
The public ferry, every hour or so, round the clock. Slow, and up to six hours in rough water. It often keeps running when fast boats stop.
By air: Denpasar to Lombok International (Praya)
About 45 to 50 minutes
Nonstop on two airlines at the time of checking. About 120 km.

March to October is the dry, calm season, with the best visibility underwater and the most reliable crossings. In January and February whole days of fast boats are cancelled.
How long to give it
Three nights is enough for the Gilis. Lombok rewards a week by itself.
Worth knowing
- In the wet season the strait can close. On 21 January 2026 every fast-boat crossing between Bali, the Gilis and Lombok was suspended for the day when waves of 2.5 to 4 m were forecast.
- There are no cars or motorbikes on the Gilis. Horse-drawn carts (cidomo) carry luggage and people, and their welfare has been a long-running concern, so we walk or cycle and do not book rides.
- If your flight home is the next morning, do not take the last boat. Cross the day before.

03 · The long way east
Komodo and Flores
There is one practical crossing here, and it is in the air. Nonstop flights reach Labuan Bajo in about an hour and a quarter. From there boats go out into a national park of dry hills and clear water that UNESCO inscribed in 1991, and that is home to roughly five thousand Komodo dragons.
How you cross
By air: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo, Flores
About 1 h 15
Nonstop, several flights a day. About 835 km.

- May: Best

April to October is the dry, clear season, and the park is busiest in July and August. The reef mantas are usually quoted as strongest from about November to April, and the sources disagree by a month at either end.
How long to give it
Three days: one to arrive and settle, one on the water, one spare for the weather.
Worth knowing
- Every walk among the dragons is led by a park ranger, and you keep at least 5 m from any dragon. Rangers carry forked sticks and know the signs.
- The park runs its own rules, entry fees and visitor limits, and they change. We reconfirm them before you go.
- The park is made of three large islands (Komodo, Rinca and Padar) and 26 smaller ones. A boat day takes in two or three of them, not all.

04 · Over the strait, up the volcanoes
East Java: Ijen and Bromo
Java is a short ferry away: thirty to sixty minutes from Gilimanuk to Ketapang, then up into volcano country. Ijen's blue flames burn in the dark before dawn, and Bromo looks across the Tengger caldera at sunrise. Both can close, and we say so plainly.
How you cross
By sea: Gilimanuk to Ketapang, Java
30 to 60 minutes
The car ferry, around the clock. Gilimanuk is the port in Bali's far west.
By road: Ijen to Bromo
5 to 7 hours
By road, the long day in the middle of a three-day trip.
By air: Surabaya to Denpasar
About 1 h 05
The flight home, with several a day.
Best months: June to November
- January: Wet or rough
- February: Wet or rough

- May: Good
- June: Best
- July: Best
- August: Best
- September: Best
- October: Best
- November: Best
- December: Good
May to October is the dry season, with the clearest sunrises and the best chance of Ijen's blue flames. November to March is cloudier and wetter, and trails are slippery. The dry season is also when fires happen.
How long to give it
Three days is the least that makes sense, and four is kinder.
Worth knowing
- Both can close without notice. Bromo shut on 8 August 2026 for a wildfire that burned about 1,120 hectares, and reopened on 20 August with the daily visitor limit unchanged at 2,752.
- Bromo also closes on a schedule, for religious days and to rest the ground. A local operator listed four closures in 2026, including the days around Nyepi and Kasada. Ijen is reported to close on the first Friday of each month; that is one source, so we confirm it.
- You wear a respirator at Ijen: the sulphur gas is real. We supply them.

The weather decides
These are open-water crossings, and the Lombok Strait is the lively one. Fast boats are the first thing to be cancelled in the wet season, with January and February the worst. Leave a day in hand before any flight home, and never take the last boat.
Nyepi stops everything
On Nyepi, the Day of Silence (Monday 8 March 2027), Bali's airport closes for 24 hours and the boats stop. Plan a buffer day either side. When to go has the calendar.
How to read this map
The coastlines are to scale, from Natural Earth (public domain). The rings around the islands are decoration, not depth or current, and the routes are drawn as curves, not courses. Times are the ranges operators publish, checked on 6 October 2026.
