A small company, a long descent
LuxeTide plans trips the way the water travels: from the mountain to the sea, with time to look at what is on the way.
Two words for a direction
Ask a Balinese friend where something is and you may hear kaja or kelod before you hear left or right. Kaja means towards the mountains, the way of Gunung Agung and the sacred centre of the island. Kelod means towards the sea. Across much of the island that works out as roughly north and south, though the words are relative: around a mountain with villages on every side, kaja is simply uphill.
What is most sacred is placed towards kaja and what is least towards kelod, and that is why temples, house compounds and whole villages are laid out along the axis. We use the pair as our compass because it is also how we like to plan a trip, and the tide in our name is where it ends. Begin high and cool, finish at the water, and let each day sit a little lower than the one before.
Orientation as described by NusaBali and in a 2020 study in the GeoJournal of Tourism and Geosites. Checked 7 October 2026.
How we work
Eight people at most
A group stays small enough to share one vehicle, one kitchen table and one conversation. Beyond that, a day becomes a queue.
Guides from the place
Each experience is led by someone who lives where it happens: the farmer on the subak walk, the cook at the market. They set the pace, and they are paid for what they know, not for what you buy.
Ceremony is not a show
A temple is a place of worship first. We dress for it, keep our distance from prayer, do not photograph worshippers close up unless invited, and plan around the ceremonial calendar rather than through it.
Honest about the seasons
If the month you have chosen is wet, or the sea is rough, or the island is about to fall silent for Nyepi, we say so before you book, not after.
Nothing that treats an animal as a prop
No elephant rides, no photographs with captive animals, no feeding shows. When we go to see wildlife it is wild, at the distance the rangers set.
The people
These four are made up, like the company. Each is drawn as a monogram in contour lines, with the height of the place they come from. There is no photograph of anyone, real or invented.
Made SudarsanaFounder and lead guideFrom Sidemen and East Bali, about 230 m I learned the island on foot, between rice terraces, long before I learned it from a van. The best days still begin with a walk.
Ni Luh Ayu PrabandariCeremony and craftFrom Ubud and the central highlands, about 200 m Every household here makes offerings every morning. I take guests to the people who make them, and I say why, so a morning at the market is more than a photograph.
Komang RaiBoats and reefFrom Sanur, about 3 m I learned to read the strait from my uncle's boat. Some mornings it is glass and some it is not, and the honest answer to 'will we go?' is 'let us look at the water first'.
Dewi HartonoTrip designFrom Munduk and the northern lakes, about 750 m I write the plans. I like a day with a long lunch in it, and I will always tell you when two things are too far apart to be friends.
What is real on this site
LuxeTide is a fictional company made for a design showcase. The tours, prices, group sizes, people and this page are sample content. What is real: the practical facts (the visa, the tourist levy, ceremony dates, crossing times and the climate) were checked against named sources on the dates shown beside them, and the photographs are freely licensed and credited.
Read how those facts were checked in the practical guide, and see every photo credit.
