Manta snorkelling day, Nusa Penida
A morning on the water with reef mantas, and the rules that keep them coming back.
The day, in short
A small-group boat day from Sanur to Nusa Penida to snorkel with reef manta rays at Manta Bay, then a second reef and lunch on the island. We keep distance, never touch, and say plainly that mantas cannot be promised.
- Manta Bay first, while it is calm
- A second snorkel site and lunch ashore
- Guides who enforce distance and no touching
Who it suits
Confident swimmers. Minimum age 10 (sample rule). Not recommended in pregnancy or for anyone prone to seasickness.
How demanding
You must be a comfortable swimmer in open water with a mask, snorkel and fins. Currents and swell vary, life jackets are available, and the boat landing can be bumpy.
What happens
- 07:00
Meet at Sanur
A safety briefing, life jackets and your equipment, then onto the boat.
- 07:30
The crossing
About 35 to 45 minutes to Nusa Penida, depending on the swell. The sea in the Badung Strait can be lively.
- 08:30
Manta Bay
Reef mantas come here to be cleaned, and they glide just under the surface. The morning is best. You float; you do not dive down, chase, or reach. Keep about three metres away, always.
- 10:30
A second reef
Another snorkel stop chosen for conditions on the day, such as Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay.
- 12:00
Lunch on the island
A simple meal at a beachside warung.
- 13:30
The crossing back
Sun-dried and sleepy.
- 15:30
Back at Sanur

With the mantas
- Never touch a manta. Its skin carries a protective mucus layer, and a hand strips it away.
- Never chase or fin after one. They are far faster than you, and chasing only stresses them.
- Keep about three metres away and do not swim directly above the cleaning station.
- Take no single-use plastic into the water and leave nothing on the reef.
When it works best
Reef mantas visit Nusa Penida all year, but there is no guarantee on any day, and some mornings you will not see one. Mornings are best, which is why Manta Bay comes first. We will always tell you what the water is doing. If we do not see a manta, we say so, and we do not stretch the truth to make the day.
Cancellation. Sample policy: free changes or cancellation up to 48 hours before. If the harbour closes for weather, you can rebook or take a full refund.
