Ubud craft, dance and offerings
A day in the hands: the offering you make, the wood and silver you watch, the Legong you end on.
The day, in short
A full day in and around Ubud: make canang sari with a family, spend time with carvers and silversmiths in their workshops, and end at the palace for an evening of Legong. Quietly, with time to look.
- Make a canang sari with a Balinese family
- Woodcarvers in Mas and silversmiths in Celuk
- An evening Legong at Ubud Palace
Who it suits
Curious people of any age. A good rainy-day plan. We ask you to treat what you see as living work, not a show.
How demanding
Gentle. A lot of standing and watching, a lot of sitting on mats, and short transfers.
What happens
- 09:00
Making a canang sari
In a family compound you are shown how the daily offering is made: palm-leaf tray, flowers in the four directional colours, incense and a little food. You make your own, and you are told where one is placed and where it is not.
- 11:00
Mas, the woodcarvers
A carver's family workshop, where figures and masks come out of timber by hand. You watch, you ask, and nobody pressures you to buy.
- 12:30
Lunch
A simple Balinese lunch, in a place chosen for the food.
- 14:00
Celuk, the silversmiths
Fine filigree work in small workshops: how a design is drawn, cast and finished.
- 16:00
Rest
A slow afternoon at Ubud Palace and the water garden beside it, or at your hotel.
- 19:00
Early dinner
Close to the palace, so you are in your seat in time.
- 19:30
Legong at Ubud Palace
A programme of Balinese dance, with a different one on different nights of the week, accompanied by a gamelan orchestra. It runs for about ninety minutes. We explain what you are watching before it begins.
- 21:30
Back at your hotel

In homes, workshops and at the dance
- Canang sari are placed on the ground, at doorways and shrines. Step around them, never over, and never move one.
- In the workshops, ask before photographing a person, and never take a photograph in a way that interrupts their work.
- At the palace, take your seat early, keep phones silent and screens down, and stay seated through the performance.
- Barong and other masks are treated as sacred. You can look and photograph where it is permitted; do not touch, and do not wear one.
When it works best
Works all year; the evening performance is outdoors under cover and runs in the rain. The programme changes by night of the week, so tell us which dance you most want and we will choose the day.
Cancellation. Sample policy: free changes or cancellation up to 24 hours before.
