The day, in short

A guided climb of Mount Batur in the early hours, timed to reach the summit before first light. Breakfast on the rim, a long look across the caldera, and the whole of the island's east lit up below you.

  • About two hours up, with a local guide
  • Breakfast cooked on the crater rim
  • Agung and the lake at first light

Who it suits

Fit couples and small groups. Minimum age 10 (sample rule). Not for anyone with knee or balance problems.

How demanding

About one and a half to two hours up a steep path that turns to loose volcanic gravel near the top, then about an hour down. No technical skill, but you should be happy on uneven ground in the dark.

What happens

  1. 02:30

    Pick-up and the drive north

An hour to ninety minutes up through Kintamani. Sleep if you can; the road is the only rest you get.

  2. 04:00

    The trailhead, and your guide

You climb with a local Batur guide. Guides are mandatory here, by agreement with the surrounding villages, and they also keep the group together in the dark. Head torches are provided.

  3. 04:15

    The climb

Roughly one and a half to two hours. The first part is forest track; the last stretch is steep, loose ash and gravel, and your guide will set the pace for the slowest person.

  4. 05:45

    The summit rim

At about 1,717 metres you find a place on the rim and wait. It is cold before the sun comes; the layers you carried up are for this.

  5. 06:00

    First light and breakfast

The caldera, Lake Batur and Agung come out of the dark in that order. Breakfast is eaten on the rim, in the warm patches where steam still rises from the ground.

  6. 07:30

    The way down

About an hour to an hour and a half, by the rim and then the lower slope. The footing is worse going down than up, so poles are available.

  7. 10:30

    Back at your hotel

Showered, fed and, honestly, asleep within minutes.

Where we meet

Hotel pick-up in Ubud, Sanur, Seminyak, Canggu and Kuta.

The time depends on where you stay: earlier from the south coast, about half past two from Ubud. We confirm it the evening before.

Pick-up between 02:00 and 03:00

On the mountain

  • Batur is an active volcano, and for the people who live around it a sacred mountain. Stay on the path, take your rubbish down, and keep your voice low near shrines.
  • Long-tailed macaques live on the upper slopes. Do not feed them or show them food; keep your bag zipped.
  • If you see offerings at the foot of the mountain or on the trail, step around them, never over.

When it works best

The clearest mornings are in the dry season, roughly April to October. In the wet season the summit is often in cloud and the path is slippery; we will tell you honestly the evening before if the forecast is poor, and move you to another day at no cost. Routes also close when the volcano's alert level requires it.

Cancellation. Sample policy: free changes or cancellation up to 48 hours before. If we cancel for weather or volcanic activity, you can rebook or take a full refund.
